Writing

I’m a professional writer and journalist with over 30 years of experience writing about music, film, art, culture and more music…

Recent projects have included work editing and aiding the translation into English of press releases for Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg exhibitions such as RealSurreal (2014), Erwin Wurm. Fichte (2015), Walk the Line (2015) and Dark Mirror (2015).

I have also written pieces for German Film Quarterly such as the major retrospective article about Matthias Mueller and Christoph Girardet (below).

For over 10 years I was the Editor of the BBC Music album reviews pages, both commissioning and editing weekly reviews whilst also writing many myself. This page on the BBC website has links to over 200 of these reviews. Please note: most of these reviews are still used by the Amazon website which used BBC reviews as synopses of the works (see image below)

Other major music publications I’ve written for are Mojo, Record Collector, Uncut.  And specialist publications such as Jazzwise and Songlines (see below). I’ve also provided pieces for The Guardian and The Daily Mail.

I have also worked extensively with British record labels compiling and writing sleeve notes for a variety of re-releases of archive material by artists such as Spark and Robert Palmer (below).

My own personal writing is on two main blogs:

Jones Is Dying has been the main site for my writing since 2006. On it you’ll find writing about everything from Mad Max to obscure bands of the ’60s.

More recently I’ve been focussing on returning to music writing, primarily with a focus on guitar playing. These writings are collected on Lousy Song – Great Solo!.
